Low Points: White House Doubles Down on “Thugs,” Adds “Thuggish”

Low Points: White House Doubles Down on “Thugs,” Adds “Thuggish”

Words Matter.  Can anyone remember the last time a media personality used the word “thug” or “thuggish” to describe a whiter person.  Can anyone remember the last time the word “thug” or “thuggish” was used by the President of the United States or the White House spokesperson? More embarrassing is that this White House has now lowered itself into a realm occupied by Fox anchor wannabes who use the word “thug” primarily as ratings bait.

What with all the behavior in the U.S. and around the globe, from Wall Street thieves who crashed the American economy to ISIS, one would think you would have heard President Obama use the word “thug” before.  But I can’t remember when that was, other than on Tuesday in the Rose Garden, when the President of the United States used the word “thugs” to describe young people in Baltimore rioting.  The day before, the Mayor of Baltimore, used the same word. If anyone has heard the word “thug” used by President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and Baltimore’s Mayor for anyone other than on Blacks do contact me.

“Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs who, in a very senseless way, are trying to tear down what so many have fought for.” said Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Monday.

Never mind that Baltimore City Council member Carl Stokes had to explain to CNN’s Erin Burnett that “thugs = nigger” the day before. I guess the first Black President of the U.S. and his White House missed that lesson.  One has wonder what was worse: The White House spokesman dodging the race question on Monday when asked or the clueless response on the word “thug.” That it took Hillary Clinton’s sudden about face on race and criminal justice to get the President suddenly talking more pointedly on those subjects should also be noted.

The Mayor’s office then tweeted out virtually the same sentence and used the word “thug” again — just in case you missed her comments on the news.  But yesterday, the Mayor did what the President and his race clueless White House spokesperson will likely never do, the Mayor dialed back her comments and apologized for using the word “thug.”
