VA Rally for Congressman’s Murdered Nephew

www.rememberchristopher.com -
Today at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., a rally, fundraiser and vigil took place for Rep. Elijah Cummings’ slain nephew Chris Cummings.  Cummings, a Criminal Justice major with a 3.5 GPA at ODU, was murdered on June 10, 2011 near campus.  He would have been 21 years old today.  Another student, Jake Carey, was shot during the same incident but survived.  Cummings’ sister Kandace organized today’s rally.  Money was raised from T-Shirt (above) sales and other items for a scholarship fund in Cummings’ name.  No one has been arrested in connection to the incident.

The Campus Safety Act. H.R. 2342 / S. 1749 / Speakers at the rally included ODU President John Broderick and Rep. Bobby Scott.  A main focus of today’s events was to put attention on Scott’s bill, the Campus Safety Act, to create a public safety center within the Justice Department.  The legislation is sponsored by Scott and Cummings in the House and Sen. Mark Warner in the Senate.

The Center will train campus public safety agencies, encourage research to strengthen college safety and security, and serve as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of relevant campus public safety information.

Cummings’ family is offering a $10,000 reward in the case and the 35th Street Merchants Association has offered a $2,500 reward. Additionally, Crime Line tipsters can earn up to $1,000. The Crime Line number is 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

The below video is a report from WAVY-TV in June 2011 on the death of Chris Cummings.
