Autopsy Shows #EzellFord Was Shot in the Back, Karen Bass Reacts

Ezell Ford was shot dead by police in California two days after Mike Brown was killed by former Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in Missouri.  Both were unarmed.  Ford’s case happened in the time frame as the Brown case and the death of Eric Garner, who was strangled to death by New York City Police Officer Dan Pantaleo on July 17, 2014.

ford1Today, Ford’s autopsy was made public.  The document revealed that Ford was shot three times, including once at very close range in the back.

The Los Angeles Times reported that, “the gunshot wound on his back showed the surrounding skin had a muzzle imprint, according to the autopsy, suggesting the shot was made at very close range.”

Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) issues the following statement late today:  “I appreciate Mayor Garcetti’s actions today in requesting Ezell Ford’s autopsy be released to the public. I join with Mr. Ford’s family in grieving his death as well as wanting to make sure that justice is served.

“The information in the autopsy is one piece of evidence, but it does not tell the complete story. I echo calls for all witnesses to come forward to share their reports of what they saw last August. This information is vital to ensuring we have the full story of what happened.

“Ezell Ford’s family and the South Los Angeles community deserve a full and impartial investigation surrounding the tragic events from this summer. There are many facts to consider—including Mr. Ford’s mental illness as well Mr. Ford being shot in the back.

“I will continue to closely monitor the Los Angeles Police Department’s, the office of inspector general’s and the district attorney’s office’s investigations.”
