Long Term Unemployed in Obama’s New Jobs Plan?

“…. The president is looking at a program such as Georgia Works — which gives unemployed Americans eight weeks of training at a local company while allowing them to still collect their unemployment benefits. And it’s no cost to the participating company….” hmm

That idea sounds a lot like a bill Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has called the Latest Title: New Jobs for America Act of 2011 (HR72).

World News Tonight reported late this evening that President Obama’s new jobs plan includes help for the long term unemployed. There have been rumors such as this before.  There was a rumor that the long term unemployed would be added to the debt deal.  Nothing happened.  Will they be included this time?  Even if they are, will any corresponding legislation make it through the GOP House?  Like I always say: Watch people’s ACTIONS pay no attention to what they say — particularly in Washington.  President Obama is scheduled to make a speech in Detroit on Labor Day on jobs and make some other announcement on jobs on Wednesday of next week.  Even if he says he supports help for the unemployed, there still is the matter of whether he will push what he says he supports.  Such a plan would benefit 6 million Americans.

That’s great, but what will 2 months of training qualify one for? 2 months isn’t long enough to get a decent reference, or build a skill set. With everything that needs to be fixed in this country, surely it would be in everyone’s interest to focus on meeting the needs of the jobless by meeting the needs of this country, and of course providing necessary training to perform necessary tasks.

  2. I agree with you Heather, I also notice in the article that it states people will still be able to collect their jobless benefits while participating in the training. But I wonder how this will help the “99ers” they have no income so how are they suppose to even get to these companies?

I am fine with doing training along with unemployment benefits. I fear that with 15.1 mil people out of work many will not even get the opportunity to participate in this program. Will they still be eligible for additional unemployment?

You remember us, Lauren, for which I thank you.

I think the President who has not said “99er” yet will not say it now.

I guess he’d rather see us stay unemployed, broke and — those of us lucky to qualify to qualify for benefits — dependent on the scraps of welfare than to take matters in hand and get us into jobs and/or meaningful training. (Although at this point I say to myself: “Training in what?” Outside of healthcare aid and medical doctor, what job categories are in demand throughout the country and a sure-fire bet?

That’s right, the job that has the highest educational qualifications in the country and a job that doesn’t pay a living wage anywhere.

I am disgusted, angry and frightened.

I appreciate your hard work on this blog more than I can say. I don’t know how you keep it up but I’m sure glad you find the strength to keep asking questions and writing up stories every day.

As a “non blk” American I was extremely proud when “our 1st & probably last blk president” was elected into office… By the actions of Obama forgetting us “99ers” I can definitely say REP/DEM it doesnt matter who is elected they are all full of crap! WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF VOTING, if the ppl we vote for dont come through for “the ppl” that voted for him in the 1st place….
