$8.2 billion a month on Afghanistan… $98.4 billion a year… Deficit anyone? Economy? Nine percent unemployment? The House is debating the Defense Authorization bill. How much time will they take to debate one of the biggest singular drains on the American economy? Maybe five minutes. Rep. Jim McGovern reminded everyone that $8.2 billion a month is spent on Afghanistan war. McGovern also remind the House floor that the government and Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is corrupt and not a regime our soldiers should be “fighting and dying” for.
“This is not a man we should be supporting. We are nation building in Afghanistan. We should be nation building in the Unites States,” said Rep. Jim McGovern who is a co-sponsor, along with Rep. Lee and Rep. Walter Jones, to get the U.S. out of the ten year war in Afghanistan. Rep. Lee has been consistent on the issue for years and was the only member of Congress to vote against going to war in Afghanistan in the first place.
GOP Rep. Chaffetz and Peter Welch are also offering an amendment to get the U.S. out of Afghanistan. That bi-partisan effort is rare when it comes to the question of war policy and defense funding. Many have questioned why the U.S. continues the war in Afghanistan after the Obama Administration was successful in capturing and killing Osama bin Laden.
