99er Bill Re-Introduction: This morning Reps. Barbara Lee and Bobby Scott re-introduced their legislation to extend unemployment insurance for those who have already exhausted it. Lee has offered an estimated cost of the legislation of $16 billion dollars — but there is no official Congressional Budget Office score — this is only an estimate. CLICK to READ: LEE-SCOTT 99ER BILL Bill number is coming… PS: Rep. Scott had to leave this presser early to fight off the GOP’s attempt (H.R. 5) to roll back President Obama’s health care reform law in the House Judiciary Committee. The GOP continues to invest much time in health care as many of the Democrats offer job related legislation.
What the bill does (via Rep. Scott’s office, thanks David…)
- Provides 14 additional weeks of emergency unemployment compensation to Tier I.
- Adding these 14 extra weeks to Tier 1 makes them available for all those who are chronically unemployed, and not just those who are currently collecting unemployment benefits from a “high unemployment state.”
- The additional benefit will be available for all unemployed persons who have exhausted their benefits as well as those who will be unemployed this year.
- This unemployment compensation expansion is similar to the expansion that was passed and signed into law in November 2009 which provided an additional week of benefits to Tier II.

Thanks so much for introducing this soon. I want a job but there are NOT enough jobs. I exhausted benefits the first week of December.
Thanks again!

This needs to pass. Employers are sitting on 2 trillion dollars and are not doing much hiring to help out this horrendous economy for the less fortunate (not rich).
I am sincerely grateful for your earnest commitment to offer assistance to our fellow Americans who have fallen to ill financial fate through no fault of their own. This is a much needed step in getting this country back to WE the people! The days of indifference and self – serving attitudes must be put to rest. For far too long, we have been collectively asleep at the wheel, but we are awakening every day, one by one. We ARE now paying attention!
In the maddness of the antics going on in Washington, your diligent efforts are appreciated and will not be forgotten.
In humble respect,
Thank You
Thanks for all your great work with the unemployment benefits legislation. I posted a story about the press conference and your efforts at: http://www.examiner.com/unemployment-in-rochester/99er-unemployment-benefits-extension-bill-introduced-by-reps-lee-and-scott
And you will never run out of other people’s money, will you? Congress is that body that blames everything on anyone, everyone, but themselves. They never step up to admit their multitude of wrongs. And yet, their meddling in virtually every facet of this country has created much harm, despite good intentions.
THANK U SO MUCH BUT SO MANY LIVES DEPENDS ON THIS BILL RIGHT NOW….I know we all HOPE this comes true but, we can’t let HOPE hold us HOSTAGE and quiet our voices. Pressure needs to really be put on the Blue side to dip into “unused stimulus money” to fund it completely or else the Red side won’t even let i…t be debated, let alone come to a vote. Ms Lee, Mr. Scott show you are really concerned about our plight and find a way to pay for this, the emergency (tho it is an emergency) approach is NOT going to work with the Red side and all that will be accomplished is millions of Americans will simply have their hopes of a lifeline dashed because the Dems didn’t do their jobs……
Bill number: HR589 per Thomas’ Library of Congress. Thank you so much Rep. Lee and Rep. Scott for not forgetting the forgotten 99ers.
i appreciate the effort but the way this bill is written, it will never pass. the republicans have stated over and over they will not pass anything that adds to the debt. when this bill was first talked about miss Lee said she had a way of paying for it, now she says she does not unless they take some money away from the defense fund, and the cost of this bill is 16 billion dollars, the republican said they will not take away from the defense fund. at the end of the day, the republicans will kill the bill and they will blame the democrats for wanting to make more debt, and not cutting other programs to pay for it, and the democrats will blame the republicans for not caring about the plight of the people, and we long term unemployed get another dissapointment. i wrather they just say there is not going to ever be any more weeks of unemployment and be done with it instead of giving us false hope trying to pass bills that have no chance of ever passing
The Extension of Un-employment Benefits Bill introduced, will be greatly needed and very much appreciated. If this bill passes through Legislation it will assist millions of people, who have simply exhausted their benefits. But, what will be the next course of action? I would say we the people, should think more independent on their own and create self sustaining businesses!! This is serious thinking, because all other races each have their own little niche.Such as the Asian, with The Beauty Products. That they simply,Do Not Use and make Plenty of Money,Selling These Products to Us! ! Italians own The Clothing Business!! African Americans Must and Should have Their Own!!
I have exhausted my benefits in April I have been on unemployment for 99 weeks, I have been looking everywhere for a job and they are just not out there for a person over 50.
The employer does not care about your knowledge they want if there are any jobs young blood.
The President wants to reform the immigration law and bring more workers into the United States when these people have our jobs. I use to work international trade they bring people in from overseas and get them a green card to work in this Country.
Something has to give, we need help and we need it now. Please its not that we want free money we want a job that we can depend on we want our dignity back. Help us get on our feet.
I feel that nobody wants to help the citizens in this country, they would rather give the jobs to other people in foreign countries then to their own people.
I have been following this subject along with looking for a job all day long and it seems as of Feb 2011 this subject has just dropped off and left all the people who are really hurting to the streets. If we do not open jobs and get these people help I feel as time goes by children with their families will be living on the streets there will not be shelters to home these families which means children will not be able to go to school.
I know that you the government does not want to help us, but we need it and we need it now.
Otherwise people are going to be killing for a dollars and stealing please help the people of this country, and then help the others I am all about helping but we are suffering ourselves.
