In 2010, 16.4 million children lived below the poverty line in the United States. We have more children in poverty than the population of the state of Pennsylvania (12.7 million). I bet you didn’t know that Newt Gingrich knows every single one of those 16 million kids and their habits. But then, Newt knows everything.
I believe I may have figured out what some need poor people around for: To feel superior. Without them there would be no one to look down upon. What else could explains a 69 year old “adult” man running for high office feeling the need to say this:
“Let’s start with the following two facts. Really poor children, in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works so they have no habit of showing up on Monday. They have no habit of staying all day. They have no habit of I do this and you give me cash unless it is illegal.â€
Newt Gingrich didn’t say this in 1959 when he was a 16 year old. He said this yesterday in Iowa. That’s right: This man is trying to convince people to hand him the keys to the White House. This 69 year old “adult” is attempting to pass as qualified to lead the nation. Note that poor people enter political debate only as a group to be kicked rather than as a problem to be solved. The underlying message: Black poor people are to be blamed for their circumstances and white poor people are to be completely ignored in political “discussion.”
And could his statement be shameful yet factual? Nope. The U.S has the highest incarceration rate in the world and 2.3 million people in prison. We have 49 million in poverty about 16 million of whom are kids. Gingrich claims poor people have no habit of working “unless it’s illegal.” If that was true we’d have at least 12 million of those poor people in prison. Never mind the working poor we see everyday at WalMart and Target working two minimum wage jobs and the exceptionally substandard education system those on the right barely discuss.
Is this what is leading the GOP polls? Isn’t this the same “adult” who gave us: “What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together his actions,” regarding President Obama last year?
Is this “adult” from the same gang that gave us “niggerhead,” and the first lady’s “uppity-ism” and “black people are brainwashed,” and,”our blacks are better than your blacks…” and “black kids were better off as slaves…?”
