Former North Charleston South Carolina Police Officer Michael Slager, who shot and killed Walter Scott, 50, at the end of a traffic stop, has been released from jail. Slager was released on a $500,000 bond. The murder of Scott was one of the most cold blooded police killings captured on video, if not the most cold blooded, in recent memory.
Scott was shot in the back as he ran away from Slager, 33, at the end of a traffic stop on April 4, 2015. After reports in the local paper that there was some sort of altercation between the two, a video surfaced of the incident which showed Scott running from Slager as he was shot. Feidin Santana, recorded the shooting and showed the video to Scott’s family. The video then predictably went viral.
The murder of Walter Scott was one of many police related videos that surfaced over the last two years. There were calls for a second officer in the video, Clarence Habersham, to be prosecuted. That has not happened.
The murder of Walter Scott spurred action in Congress soon after by South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). Scott (no relation to Walter Scott) introduced legislation for body camera funding as a result of the Walter Scott shooting.
