Democrats Sens. Dick Durbin, Pat Leahy, and Rep. Bobby Scott will be joined by Tea Party firebrand Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Raul Labrador today to announce the re-introduction of the Smarter Sentencing Act today.
If passed, the bill would end federal mandatory minimums in cases involving non-violent offenders. A press conference today at 2 p.m. will showcase rare bipartisanship on a criminal justice issue few could have guessed Dems and Reps would have agreed on ten years ago.
Sens. Rand Paul and Cory Booker are also co-sponsors of the legislation.
