At 3:45pm the DNC is sending Chris VanHollen out to gently remind everyone that Mitt Romney supported the Ryan Budget. Why is this important? Because the amnesia candidate says he supports President Obama’s request to freeze student loan rates.
DNC: “In light of the fact that Mitt Romney has declared his support for the Ryan budget, which would lock in the doubling of student loan interests rates, and cuts Pell grants and other education programs to make college more affordable all to pay for more tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, Romney’s statement yesterday that he favors lower interest rates for student loans is more of his pattern of contradiction and of making promises he can’t keep.
Romney has also promised to make cuts to education to pay for his $5 trillion tax plan. His support for the President’s proposal should be of little consolation to the cash-strapped students that he said should “shop around” for lower tuition prices, as he has racked up a long list of promises—from tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans to balancing the federal budget—without saying how he’d pay for them. If Romney were committed to keeping interest rates low for students, he would show true leadership in his party and urge Republicans in Congress like Speaker John Boehner and Representative Paul Ryan to take decisive action to maintain current student loan interest rates and keep them from doubling.”
