Lee and Cornbreadd. Last year, 2 Live Crew front man Luther Campbell ran for Mayor of of Miami. Was he taken seriously? Did the man known for partly plunging the rap era into a state of useless debauchery have a chance to become someone who would responsible for serious decisions effecting a city? The results would indicate the answers was big fat hearty hell no.
This week in Texas rapper Maurice Duhon, who goes by the rap name of Cornbreadd, announced he will run against Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee as an Independent. Jackson Lee has been in Congress since 1996. Can Duhon rap longer than his opponent Jackson Lee who is one of the most prolific talkers in Congress? Maybe. But the real question will be: In a debate setting on the issues facing the district will he be as well informed as a 9 term Congressman. Will people take him seriously? Will be be able to turn the corner on the matter of people assuming his is nothing more than a silly novelty candidacy? Stay tuned. Duhon will host a fundraiser next week entitled Who and What is an Uncle Tom? A Retrospective Conversation. Should be interesting.
Duhon posted letter on the Houston Chronicle sit and The Hill newspaper where the story was first reported. In the statement he said in part that he was more than just a rapper. “I am no mere “rapper”, I am a man whom happens to rap very well. I am a man of many talents and convictions. I am also a licensed Texas REALTOR, published poet, loving son, and avid book reader,” Duhon wrote.
