Want to see a rare press release where a Democrat commends a Republican Speaker of the House on a complex issue like criminal justice? This:
July 16: Cummings Commends Speaker Boehner for His Support of the SAFE Justice Act
Congressman Elijah E. Cummings released the following statement regarding House Speaker John Boehner’s remarks in support of the SAFE Justice Act today.
“I applaud Speaker Boehner for his support of the SAFE Justice Act, and his remarks today that he would like to see the legislation on the floor. Criminal justice reform is truly no longer about being a Republican or a Democrat, a liberal or a conservative. Rather, it is about restoring human dignity to our system. It is about the fact that the U.S. has the highest rate of incarceration of any country in the world, and we can no longer tolerate it. It is about the need to address the fact that people of color are disproportionately represented at practically every stage in the criminal process.
Now is the time for us to act. We must pass legislation like the bipartisan, broad-based SAFE Justice Act, a bill I am proud to cosponsor, which would apply scores of evidence-based, state-proven reforms to our criminal justice system. We have talked long enough, we know what works, and we have legislation that would make sure the right changes are made. Let’s get to work, turn this bipartisan moment into a movement, and pass this bill.”
