Former Rep. Cardiss Collins was the first African-American woman to represent Illinois in Congress, has died Sunday at 81. She came to Congress after her husband, Rep. George Collins, died in a place crash.

We must honor the tragic loss of Hadiya Pendleton our hearts and prayers go out to her family. She was an honor roll student at King College Prep High School on Chicago’s South Side. She was a Majorette in the school’s Marching Band,just a week earlier,she participated in President Barack Obama’s Inauguration Parade…And to be shot and killed by an unknown gunman the next week is even more tragic.
