10.7%… remember 16.7% in 2011? Everyone who is consistently against President Obama argues that “Black unemployment is still high.” Well, it’s been double the overall number for over 30 years so there’s no news there. Back in September 2011, as the Black Caucus went on a five city jobs tour, the Black unemployment number was 16.7%.
Today the Labor Department reported the number at 10.7 — the lowest number since 2008. The overall unemployment went down by 1 point to 6.1% and the addition of 200,000 jobs in June means that for the fifth straight month over 200,000 jobs have been added. The signs of economic recovery is even more interesting when you consider that Congress is completely gridlocked.
A caveat to the numbers is the increase in part-time employment: “The number of people in part-time jobs jumped by more than 1 million in June to 27 million, according to the government’s data,” reported the Washington Post.
